Many of us know vaping to be a healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes. However, recent research has shown that vaping could increase the risk of seizures in users.
If you or a loved one have experienced a seizure as a result of vaping, a reliable attorney can help you get the compensation you deserve.
Cases of Seizures Being Investigated by the FDA
The Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating reports of seizures in a small portion of vapers. So far, 35 cases have been reported between the years of 2010 and 2019, mainly among young people. Although this number is relatively small, the FDA sees it as a cause for concern.
The agency is investigating reports for common links but so far none have been found. Seizures have been reported among first-time users as well as experienced vapers.
They are also looking for links among the brands and models being used and other medications or supplements vapers may be taking.
Some vapers who experienced seizures had a previous history of seizures. Of these individuals, some said past seizures had been related to the use of marijuana and amphetamines.
Seizures have been linked to high concentrations of nicotine. E-cigarettes contain nicotine that turns into inhalable vapors. E-liquids have varying levels of nicotine concentrations and some e-cigarette design features allow users to obtain high levels of nicotine quickly.
The FDA is investigating the possibility that these design features may be allowing users to inhale more nicotine than normal causing seizures.
Other Concerns with Vaping
E-cigarettes have been controversial ever since they were introduced on the market. Some feel they provide a healthier option for cigarette smokers and can help reduce nicotine addiction. Others feel they cater to youth and may be responsible for creating a new generation that is addicted to nicotine.
In an effort to reduce e-cigarette’s appeal to youth, flavored products have been restricted and flavors other than mint, menthol, and tobacco will only be sold in markets where strong age verification protocols are enforced.
What to Do if You Experience a Seizure
If you or a loved one experienced a seizure as a result of vaping with an e-cigarette, your first course of action should be to report it on a federal safety portal.
